1853-O Liberty Seated Half Dime, No Arrows

The 1853-O Liberty Seated Half Dime, No Arrows represents another tough New Orleans Mint issue, with a low mintage of 160,000 pieces.

After the weight of half dimes, dimes, quarters, and halves were adjusted, arrows were placed on each side of the date to differentiate them from the old standard. In the case of the 1853 Half Dimes, the majority of the mintage was produced with the arrows at date.

Before the weight of the half dimes was altered, a limited number of pieces were struck of the old weight at both Mints. The Philadelphia issue is scarce but the New Orleans Mint is rare in all grades and becomes extremely rare in About Uncirculated or finer.

Fewer than ten 1853-O Half Dimes, No Arrows have been received mint state grades from PCGS or NGC, including resubmissions. These pieces infrequently appear at auction. The last such example was graded PCGS MS63 with CAC verification and sold for $14,950.
